Creating a kindness tradition during the holidays is a powerful way to teach preschoolers that their actions matter. Whether you call it a kindness calendar, kindness jar, or “giving days,” what matters most is that children feel empowered to do good.
Include the Whole Family
Sit down together to brainstorm ways everyone can contribute. Preschoolers can take the lead on:
- Bringing a snack to a friend at school. Let your preschooler help choose or pack the snack to feel involved in the act of kindness. Talk about how sharing something they enjoy can make a friend feel special and included.
- Helping wrap a gift for someone else. Preschoolers can decorate the wrapping with drawings or stickers to make it extra personal. Wrapping a gift becomes more than just a task—it’s a chance to talk about generosity and thoughtfulness.
- Saying something kind to each family member at dinner. Help your child think of one nice thing to say about everyone at the table. This simple tradition builds connection and teaches children the power of kind words.
Grown-ups can model kindness by doing their own daily acts, showing children that giving is for everyone—big and small.
Make it Visual
Use pictures to represent each act of kindness so preschoolers can “read” the calendar on their own. Add stickers or draw smiley faces when the task is completed. You can even hang a “Kindness Tree” on the wall and add leaves or hearts for every kind deed done during December.
