Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory, preschool, daycare, childcare

Are you a morning person? Some families rush out the door with a granola bar in hand and call it good, while other families have extravagant breakfasts of biscuits, bacon, and eggs. With September being Better Breakfast Month, here are a few ways to give your breakfast routine a facelift and that your preschooler can participate in.

Better Breakfast

There are three components, or macro-nutrients, that make up a healthy breakfast: carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein. Carbs often get a bad rap, but young bodies need the right kinds of carbs for energy. Complex carbs like whole grain toast, fruit, and oatmeal are high in fiber and break down slowly. Healthy fats help with mood swings, regulate blood sugar, and support adrenal glands. Avocado, eggs, nuts, whole milk, or coconut milk contain healthy fats for growing brains and bodies. Protein is so important for muscle and bone development, and it also regulates metabolisms because it helps keep you fuller longer. Some good breakfast proteins are Greek yogurt, eggs, and cottage cheese.

Here are 3 breakfast ideas that you can prepare in minutes or make ahead of time–and your preschooler will love them!

  1. Snack Plate: Snack plates or Bento boxes are a fun way to offer a variety of foods that hit all the right targets. Bake a dozen eggs to hard-cooked perfection and keep in the fridge for an easy preschooler breakfast. Serve with toast sticks, cheese, cut up fruit, yogurt, or even a leftover veggie.
  2. Smoothie: The simplest smoothies include 1 cup of vanilla Greek yogurt and a ½ cup of frozen fruit. If you want them to provide more health benefits, try this formula: 1 cup milk, ½ to 1 cup frozen fruit (like a combination of bananas, berries, or mango), ¼ cup veggies (like baby spinach or mashed sweet potato), and 1 tablespoon nut butter.
  3. Oats: There are so many ways to prepare oatmeal! Play with textures—some preschoolers prefer creamier oats while others might prefer the heartier, chewier texture of rolled oats. Don’t forget the mix-ins like grated apple, raisins, diced or dried strawberries, nut butter, seeds, or even sprinkles! You can also try these make-ahead options: overnight oats, baked oats, muffins, or breakfast cookies.
