Proper Nutrition is Linked to Preschool Success

Proper Nutrition is Linked to Preschool Success at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory, preschool, daycare, childcare

Have you heard the phrase, “You are what you eat?” What your child eats determines the activity of their cells. Your preschooler’s body requires a diet with the proper amount of nutrients in order to keep their cells and organs – including the brain – healthy. Proper nutrition can benefit the brain in several positive ways, and a healthy, growing brain can help your child succeed in preschool.

A healthy diet can increase the production of new neurons.

Neurons communicate with other cells in the brain and throughout the body. Messages sent by the brain not only allow your child to perform physical tasks like moving around, but they also help them to perform mental tasks like thinking, learning, remembering, imagining, and concentrating. Therefore, a problem that affects the brain can change their thinking, emotions, or behaviors. On the other hand, a diet that contains omega-3 fatty acids improves the formation of neurons and leads to improved thinking, attention, and memory.

A well-balanced diet has been linked to academic success.

According to the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, children that eat breakfast every day, eat at least one or more servings of fruit, vegetables, and milk each day, and avoid drinking soda are more likely to have A’s on their report cards. While preschoolers may not earn letter grades, they are building the foundation for future academic success!

Your preschooler’s brain needs the proper fuel.

The brain is always “on.” It works hard every day all day taking care of all of the body’s functions. It even works while you sleep! This means the brain requires a constant supply of fuel, and that fuel comes from the foods you eat.  In other words, what you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain. For the best success in school, your preschooler needs quality foods that contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will nourish the brain. Avoid foods that contain a high amount of sugar, fat, or processed carbohydrates. These unhealthy foods can have an effect on physical and mental health and limit academic success.
