How to Help Your Preschooler’s Attention Span Grow

How to Help Your Preschooler’s Attention Span Grow at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory

Your little baby is not exactly a baby anymore; he has grown into a preschooler.  Now is the time to start doing all the fun things together!  But how can you help him stay engaged for more than just a minute or two?  Well, it takes time and effort, but it IS possible to increase your toddler’s attention span.

Physical Preparation

Making sure your child is physically equipped to pay attention is essential.  Children need a wholesome, balanced breakfast every day to operate at their best.  When there are dietary needs that are not being met, it can make paying attention incredibly challenging.  Also, make sure your toddler is getting the right amount of rest every 24 hours.

Reading

One way to prolong their focus is to read together.  Preschoolers do not need to be glued to an electronic device for amusement for hours every day.  Sit together and enjoy books as often as you can.  Start with simple board books with little to no words.  Point out items in the pictures and read the words to him.  When he starts to lose interest, try turning the page to reel him back in.  You may only be able to complete 2-3 minutes at first, but in time your preschooler will be able to (and hopefully want to) sit and read for longer intervals with you.  As his attention span grows, you can try picture story books.  From there, you can move on to simple chapter books with pictures.  You will find that over time your child will be able to sit and actively listen for longer and longer and may not care as much about pictures anymore.  He will learn to “see” the story in his mind.

Limit Screens

As was mentioned earlier, screen time can be an obstacle to a child’s attention span.  He can sit and stare at a screen for hours and be amused, but when the devices are turned off, he is bored and unable to concentrate.  By slowly cutting back on screen time and introducing other things like outdoor activities, sports, games, and puzzles your child can flourish.  Perhaps he will even find a new hobby to enjoy for years to come!
