Sugar-Free Valentines for Your Preschooler

Sugar-Free Valentines for Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' New Territory, preschool, childcare, daycare

From Halloween until Valentine’s Day, it feels like there are back-to-back holidays and celebrations. With that comes all of the candy, desserts, and sweet treats. Maybe you have started a new diet, or maybe you just do not want your preschooler to have so many sugary treats. In addition, with dietary and other restrictions in many schools, it is often better to send in non-food items on holidays. No matter the reason, here are 10 ideas for sugar-free Valentine for your preschooler to celebrate at home with family or share with friends at school.

  1. Do a fun Valentine’s Day craft together. Many stores including Target and Walmart often have inexpensive crafts that are simple and fun for younger children.
  2. Decorate your house with hearts, cupids, and streamers.
  3. Provide non-food treats your preschooler and their friends will enjoy such as stickers, bouncy balls, finger puppets, temporary tattoos, balloons, bubbles, glow sticks, etc.
  4. Stimulate a class of aspiring artists with miniature chalkboard valentines. Here are the instructions for creating little chalkboard easels and a cute “You Color My World” tag.
  5. Inspire children of all ages with Play Doh and this printable for gifting.
  6. Purchase or check out books with Valentine’s Day themes. Read them together.
  7. Watch a movie with a love theme like Gnomeo and Juliet, Trolls, or Lady and the Tramp.
  8. Get food treats that are made from fruit or sweetened with fruit if you are needing food items but still want to avoid sugar. You can get this free printable to make some Cuties (or clementines) more festive. At home, bake your own muffins or sugar-free treat with your preschooler. Just because you are not giving sugar does not mean you cannot make a chocolate treat like this dessert pizza
  9. Make a Fizzy Heart “Love Potion” with Alka Seltzer or baking soda and vinegar. Add a little food coloring, and you have an exciting Valentine’s Day themed STEM activity.
  10. Start moving! Heart Hopscotch with paper hearts or sidewalk chalk, a dance party with love songs, or a heart scavenger hunt are all great ways to celebrate through movement.

Valentine’s Day can be a fun holiday for both preschoolers and parents, but it does not have to revolve around food, especially the sugary kind.
