If you have ever heard the opening song from Disney’s show Phineas and Ferb, you would know that there are 104 days of summer vacation. However, these days, there are usually fewer than that. Many parents feel the pressure to plan expensive vacations and fill the time with huge activities. Most children look forward to the extra fun of summer break; however, there is no need for parents to plan extravagant activities in order to have a summer full of memories. One fun way to make sure everyone has some fun this summer is to create a bucket list.
If you are unsure of how to start a bucket list with your preschooler, here are a few ideas to help get you underway.
Start with the familiar.
- Is there a playground your child loves?
- Is there an activity your preschooler enjoys that you have not done in a while?
Think about things you enjoyed when you were a child.
- Did you enjoy running through the sprinklers or playing in the water hose?
- Did you ever go to a drive-in movie?
- Did you play in a plastic kiddie pool?
Let your child brainstorm some ideas.
- Do they like to bake, build, or craft?
- Do they have favorite books or movies?
Try something new.
- Is there a place near your home that you have been wanting to visit?
- Is there an ice cream shop, splash pad, or hiking trail you have never tried?
There are many ways to create your bucket list. You may choose to write it on a large piece of paper or poster board and display it in your child’s room or a prominent area of the house. You can find fun, printable lists online that you can fill in or editable ones for printing. Remember to make it fun and allow your preschooler to be part of the process though.
Do not panic if you are unable to accomplish everything in the summer. It is just a tool to help parents be more intentional with their preschoolers this summer or beyond.
