Every parent’s goal is to get his or her preschooler to bed with no fuss. This is a lot harder than it sounds, but establishing a bedtime routine for a toddler can make all the difference. Bedtime routines not only help our preschoolers get to bed more easily, but studies show routines can also help our children sleep better and for longer.
The first step in establishing a bedtime routine is setting the steps. All bedtime routines should include brushing teeth, putting on pajamas, and using the bathroom. If you would like them to bathe, read a story, or wind down, you can add that into the routine, as well. Tailor the routine to fit your family!
Once you have decided on a routine that works well for your family, have your child help make a chart for the routine. It can be a printed out list or it can be a paper you decorate together. Whatever you choose, make sure the chart is visible during bedtime. An easy place to put it is on the bathroom mirror. You could even place the chart into a clear sleeve and have your child use a dry erase marker to check off completed steps.
When children have this chart, they are more apt to follow because it seems less like being told by their parents what to do. As your child gets ready for bed, ask them “what’s next?” and it will feel more like a game than getting ready for bed. This empowers your child and builds confidence.
When establishing your child’s bedtime routine, it is important to stick to a consistent bedtime. Changing our children’s sleep routines takes time and patience, but after a few weeks it will pay off with more sleep for both you and your child!
