Setting Goals with your Preschooler

setting goals at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory, preschool, daycare, childcare, learning academy

Preschoolers love to do new things. They love to win. Combine both of these in a goal setting activity for your little one. Setting goals requires three steps: the goal, the plan, and the reward.

The Goal.

For your preschooler, have them choose their own goal. Provide several things you think they might want to try to achieve: tying their shoes, writing their name, catching a ball with one hand, or getting dressed in the morning all by themselves. These goals need to be specific. A goal of “being prepared for kindergarten” is excellent but too undefined. Undefined goals are hard to visualize and harder to know when you have achieved them.

The Plan.

Once the goal is set, try to break it down into smaller goals. Learning to write their name requires learning how to hold the pencil, learning how to spell their name, then learning how to make each letter before putting the letters together. Each of these steps leads your child closer to the ultimate goal.

The Reward.

If your preschooler reaches their goal, what happens? Having a reward motivates all of us. Let your child choose the family game for game night or choose dinner. Maybe they can bring a toy to the table or have a special restaurant breakfast with a family member of their choice.

The goal, the plan, and the reward should be kept in a visible place for your child to see. They should be able to daily see their progress through a colored-in line or by moving up a stair step chart. Use a colorful poster and let your child decorate it. The more ownership they have of their goal, the more likely they are to push themselves to achieve it. You can even go the extra mile and make your own goal chart for a personal goal and put it beside your child. They can watch you model setting and achieving goals at the same time.
