Protecting Your Preschooler from Sun Exposure

You can bet there will be plenty of activities spent under the hot sun with your preschooler this spring and summer! Plan to keep them safe from too much sun exposure with these tips and tricks:

Choose a Safe SPF

Use an SPF between 30 and 50 for optimal protection. There are many sunscreen options out there, but SPF in sunscreen measures protection from the sun’s UVB rays. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) site has a helpful guide for choosing a safe sunscreen for your little one. Remember to reapply sunscreen every 80 minutes and after spending time in the water.  (Maybe stay away from the glitter sunscreen for now.)

Stay in The Shade

Pack an umbrella, find a tree, or search for some sort of cover to stay out of the sunlight, but still outside. You’ll be able to extend the time at the park or playing other activities with your kids when you play in the shade. You can even look for splash pads that offer lots of shady spaces for your little ones!

Cover Up

Make sure to add a rash guard to your child’s swim gear to provide added protection from the sun. Rash guards are light weight shirts that you can wear under the hot sun so your child won’t overheat.  With a rash guard on you can limit sunscreen applications. Plus, there are lots of cute rash guards for boys and girls! Sunglasses can also protect little eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

Early Bird Gets the Shade

If you have a choice, spend time outside earlier in the day rather than during the hottest part of the afternoon. Direct sun late in the afternoon can cause overheating and serious sun burns.

With these sun protection tips, you and your family can have a safe time spent in the sunshine!
