The holidays are a perfect time to begin new family traditions. Preschoolers love the bright colors, twinkling lights, and magic of the season. Traditions will help your family, and your preschooler, begin to create memories. Your child will be able to recall back to these fun moments and activities. You can help them remember these moments by talking about your experience together. Many families continue traditions passed down from their extended families, but if you don’t have very many traditions with your family, here are a few new traditions to start:
Look at Christmas lights
Load your preschoolers in the car, take along a bag of warm cookies and go look at your neighborhood lights displays. Make note of the best houses to return to year after year. Make a night of it and get together with neighbors for a Christmas light scavenger hunt!
Decorate the Christmas tree
Whether you put your decorations up early or wait until after Thanksgiving, let your preschooler help with putting out the decorations. Turn on your favorite holiday movie while you put the decorations out. Then remember to tell your preschooler about where you picked up a particular ornament or who made your stockings. Make sure to pass down these stories to your child. (And don’t worry, just fix the tree after they head to bed!)
Paint ornaments
Pick up a craft set of ornaments from your local craft store. Set out newspaper to cover your table and paint ornaments with your preschooler. Not only will you have a new tradition, but you’ll have precious ornaments and décor to add to your Holiday decorations!
When you are creating new traditions in your family, start small. Add one or two traditions to your families’ list of activities. Some activities may fall flat and you won’t want to do them again next year, or you may realize you LOVE one activity and that becomes the one special tradition every year!
