Halloween Safety with Preschoolers

halloween safety with preschoolers

Every child knows that the best part about Halloween is the candy! School costume parties and church trunk-or-treats are fun ways to get copious amounts of sugary treats, but there’s nothing quite like the age-old tradition of going door to door with friends and neighbors, ringing doorbells, and shouting “Trick-or-Treat!” If you decide to take your preschooler out in your neighborhood on Halloween night, follow these tips to make sure everyone has fun and stays safe!

Bring a flashlight

It gets dark early in the autumn months, making it hard to see where you’re going and hard to be seen by other Halloween revelers. Carry a flashlight with new batteries to shine a light on pot holes and bumpy sidewalks, but also to keep other people and cars aware of your presence.

Costume Safety

Masks can impair vision and cause your child to trip and fall. Rather than outfitting your child’s cute costume with an accompanying mask, opt instead for non-toxic makeup to complete their Halloween ensemble. Also, make sure your child’s costume isn’t long enough for them to trip over. Hem those ghostly sheets and princess dresses to an appropriate, safe length.

Safety in Numbers

Trick-or-treating is the most fun when done with your friends and family! Go in small groups with a reasonable ratio of trusted adults to children. This will ensure that everyone is safe and sticks together.

Stick Close to Home

Preschoolers and children tire quickly and easily, especially when Halloween trick-or-treating happens on a school night. Stay in neighborhoods close to home or consider driving to a safe neighborhood and sticking close to your car, so that little legs don’t have as far to go when it’s time to go home and count candy (after Mom and Dad check it, of course!).
