Your little baby is not exactly a baby anymore; he has grown into a preschooler.\u00a0 Now is the time to start doing all the fun things together!\u00a0 But how can you help him stay engaged for more than just a minute or two?\u00a0 Well, it takes time and effort, but it IS possible to increase your toddler\u2019s attention span.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reading<\/span><\/h4>\n

One way to lengthen their focus is to read books together.\u00a0 Children do not need to be glued to a screen for mindless entertainment for hours each day.\u00a0 Sit together and enjoy books as often as you can.\u00a0 Start with simple board books with few words.\u00a0 Point out objects in the pictures and read the words to him.\u00a0 When he starts to lose focus, try turning the page for a change of scenery.\u00a0 You may only be able to accomplish 2-3 minutes at first, but in time your preschooler will be able to (and hopefully want to) sit and read for longer periods with you.\u00a0 As his attention span increases, you can try picture story books.\u00a0 From there, you can move on to simple chapter books with pictures.\u00a0 You will find that in time your child will be able to sit and actively listen for longer and longer and may not care as much about pictures anymore.\u00a0 He will learn to \u201csee\u201d the story in his mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Physical Needs<\/span><\/h4>\n

Making sure your child is physically\u2013 not just mentally\u2013equipped to focus is important.\u00a0 Children need a healthy, balanced breakfast every day to function at their best.\u00a0 When there are nutritional needs that are not being met, it can make paying attention very difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n

Limit Screens<\/span><\/h4>\n

As was mentioned earlier, screen time can be a hindrance to a child\u2019s attention span.\u00a0 He can sit and stare at a screen for hours and be entertained, but when the screen goes off, he is bored and unable to focus.\u00a0 By slowly cutting back on screen time and introducing other things like games, puzzles, outdoor activities and sports your child can thrive.\u00a0 Perhaps he will even find a new hobby to enjoy for years to come!<\/span><\/p>\n
