Safety is most parents\u2019 number one priority when it comes to their child. As your child grows and starts preschool, one of the most important things you can do for her is <\/span>teaching her about stranger safety<\/span><\/a>. Here are a few points to cover with your child to ensure her safety at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Use language she will understand<\/span><\/h3>\n

Children all generally have different levels of shyness and comfortability when it comes to meeting new people, and this will be important when it comes to discussing the concept of a stranger with your preschooler. If your child is already very shy or wary of others, avoid using extremely strong language that will further encourage her fear of others. Discuss the concept of a stranger as someone that she does not know. Talk about boundaries and the difference between a \u201csafe place\u201d\u2014like home or her classroom\u2014and an <\/span>\u201c<\/b>unfamiliar place.\u201d Discuss the different behaviors that are appropriate in a safe place versus a not safe place. For example, at home, if Mom or Dad introduces her to a new friend, it is safe and okay to say hi and interact with this person. However, at the store, she should not approach people she does not know or leave Mom or Dad\u2019s side.<\/span><\/p>\n

Go over simple rules she will remember<\/span><\/h3>\n

The simpler the rules you make for your child, the more likely she is to remember them. Simple rules like these are great:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Don\u2019t talk to strangers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Don\u2019t get in anyone\u2019s car unless it\u2019s Mom or Dad\u2019s (or a previously accepted family member, carpooler). If someone new is picking your child up from school, always remember to discuss this with your child.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Don\u2019t take items from a stranger.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Don\u2019t wander off in public.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. If you get lost, go back to the last place you were with your mom and dad<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Take new environments into consideration\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    When in a new environment, like going on a trip or to a large event, say a circus, with your child, it\u2019s always important to go over new rules and point certain things out like where the front of a building is and even establishing a meeting place if you get separated. Some parents will write a phone number on their child\u2019s hand or on a name tag that says, \u201cIf I\u2019m lost, please call my Mom at this number.\u201d Always hold hands with your child and remind her to stay with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
