Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

Does your preschooler have trouble settling down at night?  Does she suddenly get very needy at bedtime or have trouble staying in bed? Getting children to bed at night can sometimes be a struggle, but well rested children are generally happier and healthier.  Here are some suggestions to start them on the right track.

Limit Screen Time

First, limit screen time. Children have a hard time settling down for the night when they are overstimulated by screens. Try to keep electronics turned off in the evening, but if that isn’t possible, turn them off at least an hour before bedtime. Have screen free opportunities available for your child such as puzzles, blocks, dolls, cars, etc.  Let your child exercise her body and brain more so it will be ready for a good night’s sleep.

Make a Routine

Next, find a bedtime routine that works for your family and stick with it.  It’s not as important what you do for your bedtime routine as it is to put one in place and stick to it.  Remember to keep noise and active play to a minimum during this time.  Listening to quiet music, playing with sensory bottles, reading books, and a calming bath are all great ideas to consider.  Preschoolers need 10-13 hours of sleep each night, so plan your nightly routine with that in mind.  White noise is also a great way to encourage sleep.

Meet the Needs

Lastly, make sure all her needs are taken care of before saying goodnight.  Whether it is eating a healthy, filling meal, getting one last drink, or picking out her favorite stuffed animal, try your best to head off any bedtime delays in advance.  After tucking her in bed, leave the room and plan on not going back.  This will encourage her to fall asleep on her own.  If she comes out of her room repeatedly, take her back immediately and leave again.  Do not make it a big deal or draw attention to it, and she should drop the habit sooner rather than later.

It is never too late to teach healthy sleeping habits to your child.  Be consistent and it will pay off with a good night’s sleep for everyone!
