As a parent, one of the best things you can do for your child is teach them to respect nature. By instilling a love and appreciation for the natural world at a young age, you’re setting them up for a lifetime of enjoyment – and stewardship. Here are a few simple tips for teaching your preschooler to respect nature:
Get Outside Together
One of the best ways to teach your child about nature is to simply spend time together in the great outdoors. Go for walks, explore your backyard, visit a local park or nature reserve. Let your child take the lead and follow their interests – they’ll learn best through hands-on exploration.
Talk About What You See
As you explore together, take the time to point out different aspects of nature and explain what they are. For example, you might say “That’s a tree. Trees provide homes for animals and help make oxygen for us to breathe.”
Be a Good Role Model
Your child will take their cue from you, so it’s important to be a good role model when it comes to respecting nature. If you always litter, they’ll think it’s okay to do the same. Likewise, if you take care to not disturb wildlife or damage plant life, they’ll learn to do the same.
Help Them Understand How We Impact Nature
It’s important for children to understand that humans have an impact on nature, both good and bad. Talk about how we can help take care of the environment, such as recycling, conserving water, and not littering.
Encourage Your Child to Practice Their Newfound Stewardship
This might mean picking up litter when they see it, planting trees, or helping to care for a local park.
