Celebrating Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Celebrating Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

You have probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Since September is Better Breakfast Month, here are a few ways to revamp your breakfast routine and celebrate a better breakfast with your preschooler.

Benefits of Breakfast

First, it is good to understand why a balanced breakfast is so important. Not only does it give your body the fuel it needs to start the day, but it can set your eating on the right track. A healthy breakfast includes fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Preschoolers need all three of these for energy and body development. If you start the day with sugary cereal or doughnuts, you are more likely to continue making unhealthy choices. Exposing your preschooler to a variety of healthy foods is beneficial for boosting the immune system and providing vital nutrients for their brain and metabolism.

“Better Breakfast” Ideas

Here are 3 breakfast ideas that you can prepare in minutes or make ahead of time–and your preschooler will love them!

  1. Snack Plate: Snack plates or Bento boxes are a fun way to offer a variety of foods that hit all the right targets. Include a low-sugar dry cereal, some protein and fats in the form of cheese, Greek yogurt, nut butter, or an egg, and some fruit. So easy and variable that you could make a slightly different version every day of the week!
  2. Smoothie: The simplest smoothies include 1 cup of vanilla Greek yogurt and a ½ a cup of frozen fruit. If you want them to provide more health benefits, try this formula: 1 cup milk, ½ to 1 cup frozen fruit (like a combination of bananas, berries, or mango), ¼ cup veggies (like baby spinach or mashed sweet potato), and 1 tablespoon nut butter.
  3. Quesadillas: Warm cheese, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, and/or beans in a tortilla that is folded in half. Serving a savory breakfast is an excellent way to start the day. Warm the quesadilla in a skillet just until the cheese melts, or you could do it in the microwave for a few seconds.
