Your preschooler may be young, but there are still child-friendly ways to explain Veterans Day to your child. Making these explanations creative and fun can help the information stick in your preschooler’s mind even more.
Here are some possible ways to teach about this national holiday.
- Choose a child-friendly book (either from your local library or favorite bookstore) to read to your preschooler. One idea is Veterans Day (Bullfrog Books: Holidays) by Rebecca Pettiford. This book is designed for 4-6 year olds and contains great pictures and basic information for young ones.
- Work on a coloring project with your child. For example, M.A. Shohid has a “Veterans Day Coloring Book for Kids Aged 4-8.” You and your child can work on coloring projects together, and you could pick and choose what to discuss from the coloring book.
- Ask a friend or acquaintance (or spouse of a co-worker, etc) who is a veteran to help answer military-type questions for your child. After reading a Veterans Day book or working on a coloring book with your child, have your child come up with a few questions for the veteran. You can give these questions to the veteran (or have your child ask the veteran directly if your child is comfortable doing so). When you get the answers, you can share the information with your child.
- Pick and show your preschooler a YouTube video about this holiday. One example is put out by “Kid Explorer” called Veterans Day – How it started and why we honor it – KID HISTORY. It is just over two minutes in length, and it is narrated by a young boy who gives a neat history lesson and historical rundown of Veterans Day. There are many good and growing options of other helpful videos from which to choose.
Your child will be able to learn about this holiday, but you may learn some neat things along the way, too! Happy research!
