Hot Days, Cool Treats for Preschoolers

Hot Days, Cool Treats for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

Whew, the days are certainly getting hotter!  On hot summer days, your preschooler will surely enjoy a cool treat.  There are lots of different options you can whip up at home, instead of chasing down the ice cream truck.

Watermelon Slush

Slice up and remove the seeds from approximately six cups of watermelon.  Toss the chunks of watermelon into the food processor or blender and puree.  Store it in the freezer overnight.  Take the frozen watermelon puree out of the freezer before heading outside to play to let it warm up a bit.  Once it is a bit softer, use a fork to mush it up and serve it into cups for a yummy, cool watermelon slush everyone is sure to enjoy!

Frozen Grapes

This cold treat is so simple and yummy you will be wondering why you haven’t tried it before!  Wash however many grapes you think your little one may eat.  Slice the grapes into bite size pieces and toss into a couple zipper bags or sealable containers.  Place the grapes into the freezer for several hours.  Presto!  You have mini grape popsicles that are healthy for your preschooler!

Fruit Smoothies

Chop up your preschooler’s favorite fruits and toss into a blender cup.  Add a spoonful of greek yogurt and a splash of milk or juice and blend.  For added sweetness, add a drizzle of honey before blending.  If you’re feeling extra sneaky, add a few spinach leaves or other vitamin rich veggie before blending.

Ice Cream in a Bag

For this cool treat, you will need (for each serving):  a quart zipper bag, a gallon zipper bag, ¼ cup milk, ¼ cup half-and-half, ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract, approximately 1 cup of ice cubes, and 3 tablespoons of ice cream rock salt.  Combine the cup, half-and-half, and vanilla extract in the quart zipper bag and seal.  Add the salt, ice, and quart zipper bag to the gallon zipper bag and seal.  Rock the bags back and forth until the contents thicken.  Try to keep your preschooler from shaking the bag, which could cause it to break open and leak.  Add any of your preschooler’s favorite toppings and enjoy!

Summer time can be a fun, magical time for a preschooler.  Hopefully, these cool treats will make it more enjoyable for all!
