DIY Instruments for Preschoolers

DIY Instruments for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

Children begin reacting to music at a very early age. From lullabies to nursery rhymes, music and songs have many benefits for children as they grow. Introducing music, sound, and rhythm is important even from a young age. Singing songs can help children learn a language and build vocabulary. Playing an instrument can help preschoolers develop their small and large motor skills. The good news is that your child does not have to begin taking piano or guitar lessons in order to reap the benefits of music.

These DIY musical instruments for preschoolers give just the right amount of motivation to grab some crafting supplies and recycled materials to start creating your own instruments at home. Sing, dance, play, and have fun!

Maracas

Do you have any Easter eggs lying around from last month’s egg hunt? Put some raw rice or beans inside a plastic egg and tape the egg shut. Take two plastic spoons, place the egg in the middle of them, and then tape all three together. Use colorful duct tape or washi tape for some added fun, and then let the shaking and dancing begin!

Drums

Preschoolers love to make noise! These drums are great because they make noise, but they are not as loud as a real drum set. In order to create your own coffee or soup can drums, you will need empty cans, balloons, scissors, and rubber bands.

Cut the nozzle off the balloons and stretch the balloon around the can. It is best to double layer the balloons in order for them to endure the beating and banging. By using two different colored balloons and cutting a few small holes in the balloon that will be on top, you can create a fun and colorful effect. Secure the balloons using a rubber band, and then make some music!

Pan Flute

This instrument comes together so quickly. Grab some straws, and line them up next to each other. Begin trimming them so that each straw is shorter than the one before it. Once the straws are cut, use tape to connect the straws together. You will want to wrap the straws several times. To play the instrument, blow across the straws without letting your lips touch them. It may take a little bit of practice but once your preschooler figures it out, they will love playing this instrument.
