Happy Write a Friend month! This year, why not show your preschooler how to write a letter of their own? Handwritten letters can be very meaningful to their recipient, even if the content isn\u2019t perfect, which makes them the perfect way for your child to show they love a friend or family member. Here are some tips to help your child write their first letter:<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk about what they want to say<\/span><\/h4>\n

Before your child begins writing, talk about what they want to say in their letter. What are some things they want to tell their friend? What have they been up to lately? This will help them get started on thinking about what they want to write.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Check for understanding\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Before you let your child send off their letter, make sure they understand everything that\u2019s been written. If there\u2019s anything they\u2019re unsure about, take the time to explain it to them so they can be confident in what they\u2019re sending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Add a personal touch<\/span><\/h4>\n

A nice way to finish off a letter is by adding a personal touch. Whether it\u2019s a hand-written note or drawing at the end, this will show your child\u2019s friend that they were thinking of them while writing the letter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pick out the perfect paper<\/span><\/h4>\n

Not all papers are created equal! Help your child pick out some fun and festive paper that will make their letter stand out from the rest. This small detail can go a long way in making their friend feel special.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Put it in an envelope<\/span><\/h4>\n

The last step is to place the letter in an envelope, address it, and seal it up! This can be done together with your child so they know exactly where it\u2019s going and who it\u2019s for. Then all that\u2019s left to do is pop it in the mail (or hand-deliver it, if you\u2019re nearby).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once your child has sent off their first letter, encourage them to keep writing! They can write back and forth with their friend as often as they like, exchanging updates on their life and sharing any new experiences along the way. You may even want to write a few letters yourself \u2013 after all, everyone loves getting mail!<\/span><\/p>\n
