Fears are a normal part of being a preschooler. Common fears include monsters under the bed, loud thunder, going to the doctor, or dogs that come too close. Teaching young children how to manage childhood fears on their own builds independence. So how can parents help preschoolers start feeling braver?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Acknowledge the fears.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Some fears may seem irrational or silly to you, but they are very real to your preschooler. Look for ways to be patient and comforting when they want to check the closet for monsters or will not go outside because there are bugs. Trying to reason with your child or ignoring his fears completely most likely will not make them go away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Preschoolers need practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

If your preschooler is afraid to go to the doctor, try role-playing what happens at the doctor’s office. If she has difficulty making friends or talking to new people, she may feel less frightened if she rehearses with you using dolls or stuffed animals. You can also help your preschooler learn about scary things through books or television shows like <\/span>Daniel Tiger\u2019s Neighborhood<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk it out.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Help your child talk about what is frightening him. Preschoolers do not always have the words to explain why they are afraid. Asking specific questions can help. Once you have a better idea of what your child is afraid of, you will be able to help him work through it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not avoid fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Unfortunately, when preschoolers avoid the situations that make them afraid, their fears never go away. Try easing your child into activities that make her nervous. By slowly helping her adjust, you can prepare her to cope with those fears on her own in the future. Do not dwell on the fear, instead start coming up with a plan to overcome the fear. Work with your child to set reasonable goals. For example, if he usually needs a parent to sit in the room with him until he falls asleep, set a goal that by the end of the week he will be falling asleep on his own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
