Grandparents can play important roles in the lives of preschoolers. Depending on how far away they live and other circumstances, they can be caregivers, advisors, or playmates. Whether they live close by or far away, the love and support that grandparents provide makes a positive impact on their grandchild\u2019s healthy development.<\/span><\/p>\n

WISDOM<\/span><\/h4>\n

Parents are probably the biggest influence on their children when it comes to instilling values, but grandparents can play a key role in a child\u2019s moral development as well. Grandparents have a wealth of knowledge and experience because they have lived through so many different things. The stories, lessons, and wisdom that grandparents share about their personal lives can have a lasting impact on your preschooler\u2019s development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SUPPORT<\/span><\/h4>\n

Maybe your children\u2019s grandparents help watch your kids while you work. Maybe they come to cheer them on at sporting events or school plays. Maybe they have offered to cover the expenses for medical bills or music lessons. Grandparents can offer help to parents and preschoolers in many ways. Grandparents also make good friends. As a parent, you cannot always be your child\u2019s friend, and other children\u2019s friendships sometimes come with unmet expectations. Grandparents do not have to worry about being the authority figure or fitting in; they can just be a listening ear and a caring friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CONNECTION<\/span><\/h4>\n

Children who spend time with grandparents gain a sense of connectedness and learn about their family history. If you live near your preschooler\u2019s grandparents, plan regular outings, meals, or visits together. If you live further away, the technology available today makes it easier than ever to visit with grandparents virtually. However, children love getting mail, so sending letters can be just as beneficial. At holidays or special occasions, grandparents pass on traditions or recipes that your children can enjoy for years to come. Grandparents are a connection between the past and the present.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may not live close to your child\u2019s grandparents, or they may no longer be in your lives. That does not mean that your preschooler has to do without a grandparent figure. Find a neighbor or someone in your church or community that could fill-in that grandparent role.<\/span><\/p>\n
