There are times for your preschooler to have fun playing with food, and it is safe to say that there are times that food and play can go perfectly together!

Turn food into sensory bins!

Find any storage container. Your preschooler can play with (unbuttered) popped popcorn. Add measuring cups (or anything from around the house!) to help aid in their imaginative play. Plus, your child has a ready-to-go snack when playtime is done. Another idea is to have your child play with uncooked spaghetti noodles. Your child can break them into pieces and construct something artistic, etc! Add some marshmallows to create all kinds of fun things! Stray pieces will be easy to sweep up at the end.

Turn food into a painting activity!

If you have gummy worms, these can be your child’s “paintbrush” to dip in paint and then create a clever and unique piece of art. You could use gummy bears, too, or any type of random food of your choice. (You could even use some of the popcorn from the above activity as the painting medium.)

Turn food into a tame explosion!

You will need baking soda and either vinegar or lime juice (and eye protection, if desired). This is a base/acid science experiment. If you have cookie cutters, you can place the cookie cutters on a tray (or any container with a raised side). Have your child place a scoop of baking soda in the middle of each cutter. When ready, have your child add the vinegar or lime juice. Watch the fun! There is no right or wrong amount to use with the ingredients! If you do not have cookie cutters, no problem, you can always do this experiment in several small bowls. This is a very flexible activity!

Food does not have to be totally traditional! With just a little bit of preparation, much fun can be had (and memories made)!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
