It is inevitable.\u00a0 The two words no parent wants to hear.\u00a0 Some kids say it every day and others, hardly ever. What are they? \u201cI\u2019m bored!\u201d\u00a0 As a parent, there are different ways to approach this.<\/span><\/p>\n

One widely held belief is that boredom is good for kids.\u00a0 It is during periods of boredom that children are stretched into being resourceful and creating their own fun.\u00a0 For some it could be exploring in the backyard with their own makeshift tools crafted from rocks, grass, and sticks.\u00a0 For others it could be an opportunity to discover a hidden talent in the form of art, music, sports, etc.\u00a0 Allowing your child to be bored can be seen as giving them permission to find what they are individually gifted for.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another way of handling boredom is to offer your preschooler \u201cjobs\u201d to do.\u00a0 Preschoolers naturally want to be big and do big things, so giving them jobs to do helps them feel like they are contributing.\u00a0 Keep in mind that all jobs need to be inspected, so you can make the jobs as easy or hard as you would like.\u00a0 On the other hand, if the jobs are unpleasant to your child, he might not complain of being bored again too soon!<\/span><\/p>\n

Creating a \u201cBored Jar\u201d is another idea to banish boredom. Put a different activity on each slip of paper in the jar.\u00a0 Your toddler can draw a piece of paper and do that activity when he claims to be bored.\u00a0 Maybe it is doing puzzles, playing with chalk, blowing bubbles, a scavenger hunt, watching a video that encourages exercise or movement, etc.\u00a0 It could also be an odd job around the house.\u00a0 You know your child best, so use your imagination!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, there are many ways you can go about trying to bust boredom, but sometimes just a few minutes with you is all your child really needs!<\/span><\/p>\n
