The prestigious Carnegie Hall called on an expert to write a research paper on the impact of music in the development of young children. Dr. Dennie Palmer Wolf wrote a meaningful paper called “Why Making Music Matters” which impacts preschoolers today.
Here are three ways they came up with that music can benefit preschoolers:
-
The Social Component
Preschoolers can bond with their caregivers through music. The type or style of the music does not matter. Simply doing the music activities with loved ones provides a sense of security for young children. Music can also be used in a game format to help form stronger social interactions between same-age children. Using music as the means, preschoolers can work together to reach a goal.
-
The Health Component
Involvement in music can help preschoolers to improve their physical and emotional health. For the physical, music and movement provide a time of exercise for young children. For the emotional, there is evidence, even in young babies, that little ones breathe differently when listening to classical music, for example. Music has been found to soothe babies in their hospital rooms. Preschool-age children can also be calmed by music.
-
The Educational Component
As the brain rapidly grows in young children, the multi-sensory approach of live music sessions is very good for the brain. Another benefit of music is that it (mixed with movement) is great for both fine and gross motor control. These skills can be built upon to learn more and more in other areas.
It is neat how music can be fun and beneficial. The fact that these above benefits affect the healthy development of preschoolers make music all the better! Enjoy using music in creative ways with your preschooler. These carefree music sessions can help boost your child toward even more exciting success.
