No nature walk is too long or too short for a walking stick! Preschoolers love collecting sticks while out on a walk. Why not bring those sticks home and use them in these fun fall craft ideas?
Before you go out and collect sticks or make your crafts, read Stick Man, by Julia Donaldson. You can check for the book at your local library, listen to it here, or watch the animated version free on Prime with your Amazon Prime membership.
Stick Tree Crafting
Materials needed: sticks or twigs, tacky glue or hot glue gun, tempera paint, glitter (optional), yarn, scissors, beads and/or sequins
- Make the frame of your tree by collecting or breaking two sticks so that they are about the same length to create the sides of your triangle tree, and then collect or break another stick that is a little shorter and will form the bottom of the triangle.
- Glue them together with a hot glue gun or a strong glue such as tacky glue.
- Then glue one longer stick down the center to form the trunk.
- Paint your stick tree with red, yellow, or orange colored tempera paint. You can sprinkle it with glitter while the paint is wet if you wish.
- After the paint has dried, start wrapping the tree with yarn. Cut off a long piece of yarn and tie one end of the yarn to the side of the tree. Have your preschooler wrap or weave the yarn around the sticks. If you’ll be using beads on your tree, show your child how to thread beads through the yarn as you go. You can also glue sequins to the sticks or yarn instead.
Stick Tree Family

- Collect sticks in various sizes and thicknesses where each stick can represent a member of your family.
- Spread glue on the back of a piece of fabric or yarn and wrap it around the bottom half of your stick to simulate clothes.
- Glue on googly eyes and yarn “hair.”
- You can use paint or markers to add a smile or personalize the sticks for each family member.
