Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping Your Preschooler Develop Healthy Sleep Habits at Kids 'R' Kids Medlock Bridge, preschool, daycare, childcare

Does your preschooler have trouble settling down at night?  Does he suddenly get very needy at bedtime or have trouble staying in bed? Getting children to bed at night can sometimes be a struggle, but well rested children are generally happier and healthier.  Here are some suggestions to start them on the right track.

Limit Screen Time

Children need lots of active play time to discover new things that stretch their minds and move their bodies.   It is especially beneficial to turn the electronics off in the evening to keep your child from becoming overstimulated.  His brain needs time to unwind before bed, so turning off all electronics an hour or more before bedtime will help.

Get in a Routine

Next, find a bedtime routine that works for your family and stick with it.  Preschoolers are creatures of habit and thrive on consistency and routine.  Include calming, peaceful elements such as a bath, soft music, sensory bottles, and reading stories in your routine.  He may also benefit from white noise to signal his brain that it is time to sleep.  Choose a bedtime that will ensure he is getting 10-13 hours of sleep each night.  Try to keep loud noises and active play to a minimum during this time.

First things first

Make sure all his needs are taken care of before saying goodnight. Feed him a healthy, filling dinner.  Have him use the bathroom one last time and get a quick drink.  Let him choose a comfort item to sleep with to feel secure.  Try not to go back to his room after saying goodnight. This will encourage him to fall asleep on his own.  If he keeps getting out of his bed, take him back to his bed repeatedly and leave again.  Do not make it a big deal or draw a lot of attention to it and he should drop the habit sooner rather than later.

It is never too late to teach healthy sleeping habits to your child.  Be consistent and it will pay off with a good night’s sleep for everyone!
