Their vocabulary is an important building block for reading later on. While we know they are practicing at preschool, it never hurts to continue to strengthen and build their vocabulary at home, as well. Here are some easy and natural ways to incorporate vocabulary into everyday life with your toddler:

Use normal vocabulary

Don’t shy away from using “big” words around your child. Often times, we simplify everything and begin talking on their level. Instead, speak normally and you might be surprised which words your toddler picks up! If they don’t understand, don’t be afraid to explain the meaning to them.

Go on fun outings

Taking your child to do a wide variety of activities will help increase their vocabulary. Spend an afternoon with them at the museum, zoo, or even the park! Talk to your child about what they see around them. The more exposure they have to different types of things, the more words they will learn and absorb.

Read to your child

This one seems obvious, but make reading with your child a priority! Pick books that interest them and have them follow along as you read. It’s okay if the book is challenging, as they will ask questions and naturally learn new words.

Provide a variety of toys

Your preschooler probably has a toy they love, whether it is trucks or dolls or dinosaurs. In addition to the toys they enjoy, try to incorporate other types of toys into playtime. Farm animals introduce a different set of words than a make believe doctor kit. This allows children to build their vocabulary in several different categories.

While building your child’s vocabulary seems like a big task, these easy ideas will allow you to incorporate learning into things your child sees as play. By increasing the difficulty and variety of words we use with our child, we will see their vocabulary improve as well. After all, preschoolers learn the most from us, their parents!

If you enjoyed this blog and want to read more, click below for our blog from last month!

Four Fun Winter Recipes to Make with Your Preschooler

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Mableton located in Mableton, Georgia?
