Teaching our children about their feelings and how to deal with them as early as possible will set them up for success. If you need ideas for helping your child understand their emotions, keep reading for some of our favorite tips!

Talk It Out

Give your child some time to calm down after an emotional uproar. Then, talk with them about what happened and how they were feeling. Help them come up with ways to handle the situation differently in the future, reminding them that using their words to communicate their feelings is important.

Give Them Words

Teaching your child simple feelings words like happy, sad, mad, excited, and scared will give them the vocabulary to talk about their emotions. When they have a good grasp of those feelings, move on to more complicated ones such as frustrated, nervous, or disappointed. To help ensure a more complete understanding, pausing while watching a show or reading a book and have your child name the character’s feeling at a particular moment. This will help teach awareness of others and empathy to your child.

Model Healthy Choices

Telling our children about how to handle their feelings only goes so far. To really drive home the point, we must make sure we are dealing with our feelings in a healthy way, too. When given the chance, verbalize how you are feeling with your child and walk through how you decide to act in response.

Emotion Guessing Game

Play an emotion guessing game for a fun way to practice identifying feelings! Make a face and ask your preschooler to identify the corresponding feeling. For more of a challenge, describe a situation, such as someone taking the toy you wanted to play with, and ask your child to tell you how they might be feeling.

We can help give our children the skills to deal with their feelings by teaching them about their emotions. Not only will this help develop well-rounded children, but it will help boost their confidence!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Mableton located in Mableton, Georgia?
