The Importance of Grandparents in a Preschooler’s Life

The Importance of Grandparents in a Preschooler's Life at Kids 'R' Kids Mableton, preschool, daycare, childcare

Every child needs a variety of positive role models in their life, and grandparents can be a great influence. Grandparents are excellent for spoiling the kids, but they provide some other important benefits for your preschooler.

A Link to the Past

Grandparents are full of stories, photo albums, and closets of things from the past. They have experienced wars, hardships, and other cultural changes that preschoolers today may never experience. Your child can learn from the past, and grandparents are the bridge between the past and the present. The wisdom grandparents share about life can also have an impression on your preschooler’s moral development.

A Connection to Family

In the past, many families lived, worked, and went to school in close proximity to each other. Generation after generation lived in the same town. However, today, children grow up and move away to go to college or take a job in a different state. If families are fortunate enough to live near each other, regular family visits or meals together help show the importance of family. If you live further away, grandparents often are the ones that coordinate schedules in order to host holidays. The technology available today makes it easier than ever to visit with grandparents virtually. Grandparents help pass on family holiday traditions or recipes that your children can enjoy for years to come.

An Extra Set of Hands

Maybe your children’s grandparents help watch your kids while you work. Maybe they come to cheer them on at sporting events or school plays. Maybe they have offered to cover the expenses for medical bills or music lessons. Grandparents can offer help to parents and preschoolers in many ways. Grandparents also make good friends. As a parent, you cannot always be your child’s friend, and other children’s friendships sometimes come with unmet expectations. Grandparents do not have to worry about being the authority figure or fitting in; they can just be a listening ear and a caring friend.

Just because you may not live close to your child’s grandparents or they may no longer be in your lives, does not mean that your preschooler has to do without a grandparent-type role model. Seek out a neighbor or someone in your church or community that could fill that important role.
