This month is Write a Friend month, and we’re celebrating by sending handwritten letters to those we love! If your child is ready to write their first letter, there are a few things you can do to help them get started:
Talk about what they want to say
Before your child begins writing, talk about what they want to say in their letter. What are some things they want to tell their friend? What have they been up to lately? This will help them get started on thinking about what they want to write.
Help them with the format
Show your child how a letter is typically formatted, with a greeting at the beginning, body in the middle, and a closing at the end. You can also model this by writing a letter along with them.
Encourage them to be creative
Letters don’t have to be boring! Encourage your child to be creative in their writing, whether it’s through the words they use or the way they decorate their letter. Adding some drawings or stickers can make it even more fun for both the sender and receiver.
Let them take their time
Don’t worry if it takes a while for your child to finish their letter. They may need some time to think about what they want to say or how they want to say it. And that’s okay! Just let them work at their own pace and be there to help when needed.
Edit together
Once your child has finished writing their letter, go through it together and help them edit as needed. This is a great opportunity for you both to talk about grammar, spelling, and any other mistakes that may have been made along the way. Correcting these mistakes now will help avoid confusion later on down the road.
