Paying it Forward This Thanksgiving

paying it forward

During this season of gratitude, help your preschooler understand the importance of giving to the community. These special acts of charity will build generosity and gratitude in your child.

Be a good neighbor.

Make it a point this month to be a good neighbor at home. Along with your family, offer to help one of your older neighbors with their yard, or a project in their house. Young kids can help pull weeds or pick up small, fallen branches. You could make a meal with your child and deliver it to a neighbor with a hand drawn card to bring a smile!

Bring them along.

If you already volunteer and serve in a charity or ministry, take your preschooler along with you. Allow your child to see how you spend your time giving back in the community. Young children can help with small projects, carrying items, greeting guests, and even cooking!

Donate to a clothes closet.

As you prepare your home for the holidays, gather items like toys and clothing to donate to a clothing closet. Explain why you are donating to your child and let them pick gently used items that they can give.

Make thank you cards.

Make thank you cards and sweet treats to deliver to those who serve in your community. Share cookies and colorful notes with your local police and fire station, or meet your sanitation workers at your trash can with a snack and a water bottle to tell them thank you for their hard work!

When we share these experiences with our preschoolers, it helps give them a better understanding of the community in which we live. When parents model kindness and generosity, children will model those acts as it builds their own strong character!
