Summer is here, and that means your preschooler may not be in school full time. Whatever summer looks like for your family, it is still a great time to plan for all kinds of learning activities. Preschoolers learn best through play, and here are a few ideas for some fun summer learning when the kids are at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Build reading and writing into everyday activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

There are so many amazing picture books you and your child can enjoy together. However, reading and writing are a part of so many other things that you do each day. First, let your preschooler help write or draw the items for a grocery list. Next, they can draw a picture for someone and dictate a description or a letter for you to write. Then mail it to a friend or grandparent. Finally, read a recipe and bake something together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Create active learning experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Check with your local parks and recreation department or library about camps and other activities. You can often find free, indoor exhibits or events that target a variety of preschool learning goals in your city throughout the summer. In addition, your child can work on developing social skills at these events. Create a family calendar, so you do not miss any activities!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Develop active bodies and brains.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Movement enhances learning. When the weather gets hot, it is tempting to stay inside in front of a screen. Instead, turn up the music! Preschoolers learn new things like sounds, words, and patterns through music. Add some dance, and they can explore their body movements, too. Earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the weather is milder, go geocaching, where families search for hidden “caches\u201d or containers using a GPS app on your smartphone.<\/span> Everyone loves a scavenger hunt!<\/span><\/p>\n

Watch a garden grow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Summer is a good time to plant a few seeds and watch them grow. Encourage your preschooler to draw his observations in a journal. There are several great websites and YouTube channels devoted to gardening with children where you can get some inspiration and helpful tips. Who knows, you might even get a little wet watering the plants with the hose!<\/span><\/p>\n
