Although your child may only be entering preschool, you may already be thinking ahead to kindergarten. So, what should your preschooler know in order to be ready for kindergarten?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Academic Skills<\/span><\/h4>\n

Most children that are ready for kindergarten know some of the basics such as saying the alphabet and counting to 10. If your child has been in a preschool setting, they may also be able to recognize the letters and their sounds as well as count to 100. They should also be able to identify and try to write their own name. Listening to stories, drawing pictures, identifying colors, and naming shapes are skills your preschooler should be working on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Social Skills<\/span><\/h4>\n

If preschool is your child\u2019s first experience away from home, they may deal with some separation anxiety. Preschool is an excellent time to work on the transition from home to school. Your child will spend a lot of time interacting with other children, and it takes time and practice to learn social skills. It is good to begin working on sharing, listening to others, and using manners in preparation for kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Motor Skills<\/span><\/h4>\n

Children will work on fine (small) and gross (large) motor skills throughout their elementary school years. Using a crayon and a pencil, cutting with scissors, putting a puzzle together, hopping on one foot, and climbing stairs are common things your child should be able to do before kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-Care Skills<\/span><\/h4>\n

Parents are often so focused on the other three skills mentioned that they forget about self-care skills. Being able to use the bathroom independently is a must. That includes wiping; buttoning, snapping, or zipping their pants; and washing their hands. Also, is your child able to eat completely independently? Parents may not realize that children need to be able to open yogurt tubes or put straws in juice boxes. Go through your daily routine and make sure your child can complete daily tasks independently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your child may not have mastered everything on this list. That is okay! Children develop skills at different rates and may be stronger or weaker in certain areas when compared with their peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
