Summer is a carefree time often full of pushed back bedtimes and late mornings. It is easy to abandon schedules and routines during the summer months. Routines and schedules need to be reestablished well in advance of returning to preschool.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two to four weeks before returning to preschool, create and execute a new routine. Have a set time for getting up and going to bed each day. This will help the preschooler readjust to preschool hours. By starting weeks in advance, it will give everyone a chance to make needed adjustments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from establishing a set time for getting up and going to bed, practice getting ready in the morning. A picture chart would be helpful in assisting the preschooler know what is necessary to accomplish each morning in order to be ready to head out the door. Practice getting up, eating breakfast, dressing, brushing his teeth, and having his backpack ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Practice following directions with your preschooler. Depending on the age of the preschooler, she should be able to follow one to two step directions. These directions can be as simple as finding a specific toy and bringing it to a sibling. There will be many opportunities to follow directions in preschool, so it would be fun to practice following directions while still at home. This could be done through new games, being creative while out on a walk, simple cooking, or even art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes time for preschool to resume, in addition to the morning routine before preschool, there will need to be an established routine for after preschool. This would include what happens when he arrives home to where his things need to be placed in order to be ready for the next day. Will she need a nap or quiet time? Is it an appropriate time for a snack? Where should her backpack, shoes, and weather appropriate gear be placed? Having a routine at home will help her adjust to the changes brought by returning to preschool.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be sure to talk to your preschooler about the new routine. Change is easier to handle when one knows what to expect. Routines provide preschoolers with a feeling of security. Having a clear routine can help a preschooler grow in confidence and independence.<\/span><\/p>\n
