Spring is here, and new life is popping up everywhere. The weather is much more enjoyable, and the fresh air is calling your name! It is time to get outside and enjoy a nature walk with your child.
A nature walk can be long or short. It can be in your backyard, neighborhood, or on a trail at the park. It is good exercise for everyone after being cooped up inside during the winter. Getting outside and breathing in the fresh air can uplift moods and cleanse toxins from the lungs. It is beneficial to anyone who participates.
Preschoolers are naturally curious, so there are many things that can be explored and discovered outside. Throughout your walk, focus on using different senses. Pause for a minute and tell everyone to close their eyes. Listen to the sounds in nature. Do you hear any birds? Running water? Insects? Rustling leaves? As you walk, point out different things you see such as birds, flowers, different kinds of leaves, acorns, pinecones, etc., and talk about them. Take the time to feel different textures on the tree bark or rocks. Sniff the fresh air and try to identify the smell of flowers or water or freshly cut grass.
Another fun thing to do is collecting various kinds of leaves or rocks. Because leaves will dry out and eventually crumble, you can help your child make leaf rubbings from different types of trees and put them in a special notebook. Be sure to label as many as you can. Alternatively, your preschooler could start a rock collection by finding one special rock from each walk you go on. You can help him look for rocks that have unusual colors, shapes, or textures.
Although all these things are fun, the best thing about nature walks is spending time together. Get out there, explore, and have a great time!
