How to Have a Stress-Free Holiday

How to Have a Stress-Free Holiday

Tis the season to be jolly…but also frazzled and stressed. For a preschooler and his or her parents, the holiday season brings us into a unique situation where children are spending a lot of time at home with high expectations of what the holidays can and should be. As a parent, you can tune down a lot of unneeded stress by planning ahead and following just a few quick steps.

Talk About the Holidays Early

Don’t wait until too late in December to start discussing plans for the holidays. You of course want to open a discussion about what your child may want for Christmas gifts or the like, and an early conversation about this will save you some last-minute store-dashing. Furthermore, preschool age children are at a time in their lives when they are just beginning to establish holiday traditions, so it’s important to explain why and how your family celebrates the holidays. That brings us to the next point…

Plan Out Some Holiday Activities

With school children coming home for holiday breaks, it’s important to fill their time with activities other than sitting at home all day. These activities can even cultivate fun holiday traditions within your family (such as volunteering with food shelters, going to see Christmas lights, visiting Santa Claus, etc.). Be sure to check your local community calendars and other print and online resources to see what kind of holiday opportunities are available to help pass the time.

Explain the Reason for the Season

The holidays aren’t just about fun, games and gifts, though. For many, the holidays stem from a religious or cultural background. Whatever holiday your family prefers to celebrate, be sure to take a moment to remind your preschooler why you hold these traditions in your family. Taking a moment to talk about the reason for the season can help your child understand the nature of why you celebrate the holidays and may bring some much-needed serenity to a hectic time of year.
