Childproofing Tips for New Parents

Childproofing Tips for New Parents at Kids 'R' Kids Landstar, preschool, daycare, childcare

Preschoolers are born to explore! They climb, touch everything, and put things in their mouths. While it is important for babies and preschoolers to try new things, their curiosity, when left unsupervised, can lead to accidents. Before you begin childproofing your home, get down on your hands and knees and see how things look from down there. This will help you figure out what areas in your home need the most attention. Below are a few tips for new parents when childproofing your home.

Safety Gates

Baby gates come in a variety of sizes and fittings for your home. You might think these gates are only for the top or the bottom of the stairs, but they can be used several different ways. They work well for keeping your child in or out of spaces when needed.  They are especially useful if you have a pool to protect your child from falling into the water. Other gates can create a play area for your child in order to contain them and their toys! Portable mesh gates are even easy to travel with if you are visiting someplace that may not be child friendly. Gates are a versatile product that can keep your child from many hazardous situations.

Window Coverings

Check window coverings and consider replacing corded window coverings with safer cordless or inaccessible cord options. Unfortunately, the cords on window blinds can be a strangling hazard for young children.

Heavy Objects

Not only can large objects like dressers and bookshelves tip whenever children begin pulling up or trying to climb on furniture, but heavy items like televisions, lamps, and dishes can also be knocked down. It is important to use anchors to secure heavy furniture to the wall as well as remove heavy things that could be a falling hazard.

Dangerous Products

Curious children love to open whatever they can; therefore, you are going to want to keep all household cleaning products, personal care products, and medicines in their original containers, out of children’s reach and sight. It is important to lock any cabinets that contain these hazardous products.
