It introduces them to the world of literature and helps them learn new words and concepts. For some children, it is difficult to sit through an entire book. This is why poetry is great for kids with shorter attention spans. You can teach your little ones to love poetry by making it enjoyable and educational. Here are three easy ways to incorporate poetry into your tot’s life.

Show your preschool child the classics.

Lay the foundation with the traditional Mother Goose nursery rhymes including Simple Simon, Old Mother Hubbard, Peter Piper, and Jack Sprat. Repeat them to your child and before you know it, he or she will be able to recite these old standbys for you!

Use numbers.

Incorporate numbers and counting with rhymes such as Five Fat Peas, One Potato, Two Potato, and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. You can also try mixing poetry and play with children’s rhyming games such as Ring Around the Rosy and Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.

Start reading poetry with your preschooler!

Read up on classic poems and popular books to familiarize yourself with poetry and even get ideas on how to write your own! A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends are two wonderful poetry books written by Shel Silverstein. Additionally, One Fish, Two Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Cat in the Hat are three classic poems written by Dr. Seuss, who is famous worldwide for his children’s literature.

Reading, memorizing, and reciting poetry empowers children and builds confidence as they move forward. Remember to explain words you read that are unfamiliar to your child and discuss what the poems you read are about and how they make your child feel.
