While teaching your child to be patient is a difficult task, with consistent effort and patience on your part, you can set your child up for success in this area! Keep reading for some practical ways to help your preschooler practice patience.

Taking Turns

To make sure everyone has the chance to participate, sometimes your child with have to take turns! This is a great thing to begin practicing at a young age because it never changes. Take your child to the park and have them practice taking turns on the swings. If they don’t handle it well the first or second time, don’t give up! Continuing to require them to take turns will help reinforce the skill and begin developing a more patient mindset.

Start Early and Small

When you want to instill something in your child, it is always a good idea to start at a very young age. Begin requiring patience from your child in small doses. For instance, have them wait a couple minutes for more juice if you are in the middle of something. While this seems small, it is a good start for your child and as they grow up, you can help push them to be patient for longer times.

Self-Control

At the core of patience is teaching our children that they can and should control their emotions and resulting actions. Before you grant their requests, ask them to regain composure. This will help them develop self-control by reinforcing that acting out will not get them what they want.

Make Them Wait

We live in a culture of instant gratification, which makes teaching our children patience even harder! You may need to delay things for no reason other than teaching your child patience. If they want a new toy, there may be nothing wrong with getting it for them now, but by making them wait until they have enough allowance or have a birthday, you are teaching them that patience pays off!

If you want to practice developing patience in your child, begin incorporating these four tips into your day-to-day lives. Before long, you will begin seeing small seeds of patience beginning to grow in your preschooler.

If you enjoyed these tips, you’ll want to check out our previous blog on Halloween Activities with Preschoolers!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Kings River located in Humble, Texas?
