But there are still occasions when it’s nice to send someone a handwritten letter. For example, you might want to write a note to a friend or relative who lives far away. Or perhaps your preschooler wants to share their thoughts with an older relative on special occasions like birthdays or holidays. Here are some tips for both kids and parents that will make writing and sending letters fun:

Make a list of what you want to say

If you’re writing a letter with your child, talk about what they want to get across and whether there are parts that are important. For example, if they want someone to know how much they love them, or that they’ve lost a tooth, make sure these things are included in the letter.

Always end with a compliment or expression of friendship

It’s important to end the letter with a compliment or expression of friendship. You might say, “I hope we can be friends.” Or, “Thanks so much for letting me play with your toys.” Don’t forget to sign the letter!

Designate a time for writing letters

Give your child a designated time to write letters. Schedule it on their calendar, and have them check off the time that has passed so they can see how long it takes to complete one letter. It’s important that the designated writing time is free from distractions, so set aside some quiet time each week when you can focus on writing together.

Make sure you have all the supplies you need

You’ll want to make sure your child has everything they need before writing starts: paper, pencil or pen (or both!), envelopes, stamps, stickers—whatever makes them want to write more often! A trip to the store is good motivation for kids who need reminding that there are things out there in this world besides schoolwork and homework assignments.

Use cute stationary and pens

Cute stationary is a great way for your child to express themselves and have fun. It will help them feel more excited about writing their first letter, so they are less likely to get frustrated or give up halfway through the process.

Teach how important it is to send mail back and forth with friends before starting this project with them

Children love getting mail because they get something physical out of it—so they can see who sent them something and also look at what was sent! This type of interaction makes learning about people around the world even better!

Remember that the envelope matters, too!

Make sure the envelope is addressed correctly (the correct address and name, as well as the correct zip code). Use a stamp, or write a message on the envelope. It should be something cute and personal. Put a return address on the back of the envelope so that your child’s friend can send them something back if they want to. This will make it easier for him or her to respond in future letters—and shows thoughtfulness on behalf of your child!

Writing letters is a great way for your child to learn how to spell and write, as well as communicate with others. You can also encourage creativity by helping your child create their own unique lettering style or design. There are many creative ways your preschooler can write their first letter, such as writing with glitter, drawing on the envelope or creating a special design. You can also create a list of what you want to say before beginning and use it as reference while writing. The most important thing is that after your child has written their letter or card, it gets sent off immediately so that they can get a letter back from their friend soon!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
