Your preschooler can be taught to demonstrate thankfulness even at his young age just by mimicking you. Here are some thoughts on how to model thankfulness for your child.

Sometimes it is as simple as practicing what you preach.

If your toddler consistently hears and sees you being thankful, he will almost certainly pick up on it, too. Start with a simple “thank you” when your child does something kind for you or gives you something. Then, always remind him to say “thank you” when a kind deed is done for him, or he receives something. Practice makes it permanent.

Talk to your preschooler about people that they are thankful for.

Maybe it is someone in the immediate family or a grandparent, aunt, or uncle. It could be a teacher or a friend. Make it a habit to find someone to be thankful for every week. Dig a little deeper and ask your child why they chose that particular person. Then, you can help your child come up with a way of letting that person know that they are special to him.

Finally, talk about things that you are thankful for in your everyday conversations.

Maybe it’s a house, or a pet. It could be having food to eat and a warm bath. The possibilities are endless! Remember, thankfulness should not be reserved for just one month of the year! Incorporate it into every day and you will be amazed how quickly your preschooler catches the gratitude attitude, too!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
