Preparing your preschooler can be an exciting journey rather than a daunting task. Common categories of essential skills are language, reading, math, social and emotional, motor skills, and self-care.

Language

Language focuses on the ability to communicate clearly, express oneself, compare and contrast, and follow two-step directions. A preschooler can improve simply through conversations with a variety of people. Playing games could help with two-step directions.

Reading

Reading includes listening to stories, letter and sound recognition, and learning to turn pages. Many of these skills happen naturally through being read to. To help with letter recognition, alphabet books like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom are helpful and fun resources.

Math

Math skills include shape, number, and color identification, counting to ten, and comparisons. Hide and Seek is a fun way to improve counting. I Spy can help with colors. For size recognition, try baking three cookies of different sizes and see which one he wants!

Social and Emotional

Social and emotional skills involve the ability to adapt, separation from caregivers, playing with others, using polite vocabulary, and listening for a minimum of five minutes. Field trips and play dates are great ways to grow these skills. These skills require interaction exposure.

Motor Skills

Motor skills include running, jumping, throwing a ball, building puzzles, using scissors and pencils, copying shapes, and beginning to write letters. Playing outside is an easy way to improve many of these skills. Others will require intentional practice.

Self-care

Self-care covers knowing first and last name, using the bathroom facilities alone, and dressing herself. Simply asking the preschooler his name will help him remember first and last name. Playing dress up can work on buttons, zippers, and snaps. Many different songs can be sung while washing hands.

It is important to remember that each child will develop at her own speed, and not all skills need to be mastered before kindergarten. The most important things one could do to prepare his child for kindergarten are to read, make memories, foster good character, and spend time together.

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
