Poetry is beneficial for preschool children in many ways. It gives them an appreciation for literature and shows them that writing (and rhyming) can be fun. Here are three fun ways to teach your preschooler about poems.

Start reading poetry!

Read poetry to your preschooler at least once a week. Choose fun and familiar verses such as the traditional Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Or, you can check out A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends, two wonderful poetry books written by Shel Silverstein.

Additionally, One Fish, Two Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Cat in the Hat are three classic poems written by Dr. Seuss, who is famous worldwide for his children’s literature. By familiarizing yourself with poetry, your little one will be much more open to reading and writing it themselves. You can even practice reciting the poems together line by line.

Practice, practice, practice.

Choose easy, one-syllable words and have your child come up with rhyming words (bat, hat, cat, sat, etc.). Combine the words to make silly poems. Involve the whole family for some fun times around the dinner table!

At the end of the day, it’s important to keep your exploration of poetry fun and enjoyable.
