The holiday season is a magical time of year, but sometimes there’s too much magic and not enough time to experience it all. With little ones, we want to make sure that they have the most magical season ever, but trying to do it all will leave us broke, exhausted, and stressed. Try some of these tips for a stress-free (or at least a reduced stress) holiday season with your preschooler!
Plan
Ideally, we as parents and caregivers would start thinking about the holidays weeks and months in advance. Get a family calendar and put all of the events you’d like to attend on it so everyone can see what the entire week or month looks like. Doing this will likely keep you from over-committing your family to too much “magic.”
Just Say No
Do not be afraid to prioritize your family’s needs and say no to an invitation that has come in that would add one too many things to your shopping list or your calendar! If it helps, set a cap on how many weekly events you think your family can handle, and commit to saying a gracious “No, thank you” to any invitations that come up after the calendar is full.
Presence over Presents
Finances and stress about buying gifts for every teacher and family member can nearly ruin a holiday. Focus more on making memories and experiences you and your preschooler will remember forever, and commit to stopping and taking a breath and being present in these moments.
Be Flexible – Read the Room
You know your preschooler and your family best. If, despite all the planning and saying no, you’re noticing that your children are starting to melt down, pack up and take everyone home. If necessary, graciously decline the next commitment as well.
