Outer Space Activities Preschoolers Will Love

Outer Space Activities Preschoolers Will Love at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

Three…two…one… blast off! There is something about space that gets preschoolers excited. Have some fun together with these outer space activities.

Taking a Bath

Materials Needed: washcloths, water, bubbles

*This one can be a little messy, so you might want to go outside and use a water hose or take a pitcher full of water outside.

When in space, everything floats because there is no gravity. Therefore, astronauts cannot take a bath. Instead, they take sponge baths. Wet a washcloth (do not wring it out) and have your preschooler try to wash their face and hands.  What happens to the water that drips out? (It falls into the sink or to the ground because of gravity.) In space, those drops would float around the room like bubbles! Then blow some bubbles and have your child try to catch them and use them to “wash” their hands. What would it be like to try to bathe in space with no gravity?

Making a Moon

Materials Needed: aluminum foil, scissors, a few coins, black construction paper, glue

  • Draw a circle on the aluminum foil and cut it out.
  • Slightly crinkle up the aluminum foil circle. Carefully open the aluminum foil and flatten it out.
  • Place a coin underneath the foil and press around the edges of the coin. Repeat with as many coins as you would like.
  • Flip the foil circle over, and you have moon craters!
  • Glue the foil moon on a black construction paper. Draw stars or the Earth if you wish!

Being an Astronaut

Does your preschooler have what it takes to be an astronaut?

  • Blow up an air mattress or place pillows across the floor and practice moonwalking.
  • Without gravity, food would not stay on their plates. So, eat yogurt, applesauce, soup, or pudding like astronauts would, straight from a hole in a zip top bag.
  • Sleeping is also different for astronauts. Wrap your child in blankets or have them get in a sleeping bag and try to sleep standing up against the wall. Check out this video to see what it is like for an astronaut to sleep in space.
  • Create a “space shuttle” obstacle course and have your preschooler guide a balloon through the course without letting it fall on the floor.
