Summer Learning at Home with Preschoolers

Summer Learning at Home with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, childcare, daycare

Summer is a wonderful time to kick back and relax without the added stress of inflexible schedules, but before you completely check out, it is beneficial to continue with a routine and learning with your preschooler. Summer can be an enjoyable time of exploration with your preschooler and activities that might not be as feasible during the school year.

Reading

Summer learning can take on many different forms. It does not even need to look like traditional learning. Reading is one of the best places to begin with summer learning. It can be done anywhere, and anyone can do it. If your preschooler is not actually reading, allow her time to look through books, but also take the time to read to her. Frequent trips to the library should be on everyone’s summer to do list!

Themes

Another option is to learn through themes. Each week you and your preschooler can study one topic of interest. Gardens, animals, transportation vehicles, construction, and music are just some ideas to begin with. Your local community may even have places to visit that will allow your preschooler to see first hand what is being studied.

Outside

With the warm weather that summer brings, spend time outside learning with your preschooler. Take a walk, do a scavenger hunt, count how many different birds you see, journal about the favorite thing she saw, and consider going to a “pick your own” farm. Outside is the perfect place to work on chalk numbers or letters, do sensory play in sand and water, dig in the dirt for different insects, and do hands-on experiments.

Games

Board games also can be learning tools. There are many different games that teach preschoolers necessary skills for later on in school. Memory, Candy Land, Go Fish, Monkey Around, Dominos, Colorama, Chutes and Ladders, and Hi Ho Cherry-O can teach and reinforce memory, colors, numbers, gross motor skills, and counting. There are many more really wonderful games for preschoolers.

The warm weather of summer and slower pace opens up different doors of learning that are not always possible during other times of the year. Remember that preschoolers learn best when they are able to be a part of the learning activity, so embrace the summer months, as you facilitate a learning environment for your preschooler.
