How to Tame Toddler Tantrums

How to Tame Toddler Tantrums at Kids 'R' Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

“Brace for it!” “Not again!” “Another one? Please, no!” Those toddler tantrums! They sure can bring out the worst in your preschooler (and, at times, everyone involved). What is a person to do? Thankfully, there are specific strategies to help deal with toddler  tantrums.

“In-the-Moment”

Keep in mind that when your preschooler is in the middle of a tantrum, trying to make reason of the situation will make no difference in your child’s immediate behavior choices. The teachable moments surrounding a tantrum happen before and/or after a tantrum. During the tantrum, though, is when you can do your part to keep everyone safe.

The Proactive Teachable Moment

Before a tantrum strikes and you see signs of your preschooler getting frustrated, help your child to recognize the frustration at hand. Then, before things get too carried away, help your preschooler come up with ideas that will be calming for your child. This process is designed to help de-escalate the situation before a tantrum strikes.

“After-the-Fact”

Tantrums will sometimes still happen, though. Once the tantrum is over, you can use the situation as a teachable moment for what your child could do differently the next time to help remain calmer at the beginning.

Targeted Books

Once you get a grasp on what sets off your child in the first place, you can find targeted books dealing with that behavior. Here are some examples of interactive books. Each book gets the child involved in proper decision-making.

What Should Danny Do? by Ganit and Adir Levy

Don’t Get Angry, Annie: Stay Calm by Lisa Regan

Wait Your Turn, Tilly: Be Patient by Lisa Regan

Though immensely frustrating, tantrums are part of most preschoolers’ homes. Thankfully, using consistent methods can help your preschooler grow and mature into one day being able to use self-calming strategies that will help all involved.
