Tips to Help Your Preschooler Learn to Dress Themselves

at Kids ‘R’ Kids Katy, preschool, daycare, childcare

One would think teaching simple tasks would be the easiest part of parenting! But, for tasks that you can complete as an adult on “auto-pilot,” it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to teaching your preschooler. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Talk it out!

Something that will help your preschooler remember the steps of getting dressed is narrating what you are doing as you dress them. Through repetition, your child will slowly learn the process, and naming the steps can help speed that process along. “One foot in, now the other foot,” and “Pull your shirt down over your tummy” can become a memorable routine that will aid your child in remembering the steps when dressing themselves! Try to encourage your preschooler to say the steps along with you. If you’re feeling creative, you could even turn it into a song!

Team work makes the dream work!

As your child is learning, they will still require your help. Do not worry that assisting your preschooler is hindering their ability to learn! First, allow your child to do the more simple steps of getting dressed first, while still assisting them with the steps they haven’t quite mastered yet. Your preschooler may be able to put their shirt on over their head, but they may need your help putting their arms through the sleeves. Your child may be able to pull u-p their pants, but may not be ready to zip, snap, tie, or buckle them. Practice their skills this way, and once they’ve gained confidence, you can move on to teaching more complex tasks like tying and buttoning.

Be patient.

Learning to dress themselves is a new skill for preschoolers and it may take a while for them to master it! Be patient and be sure to provide plenty of positive reinforcement as they learn.

It’s no secret that preschoolers love having independence! By helping them learn to dress themself on their own, you are helping your child gain confidence as well as important life skills.
