Penmanship is an essential skill for success in both school and in life. Showing your child how to write letters is a great way to help them develop this important skill. Here are a few simple notes that you can follow to make letter writing more fun for you and your preschooler!
Bring plenty of paper!
Chances are your child will want to hit the “undo” button a couple of times, so be proactive and prevent stress by always having a backup!
Practice writing letters regularly
Set aside a few minutes each day to write letters with your child. This will help them develop their skills and become more confident writers.
Let your child’s personality shine through!
Writing with a standard pen and paper may be the norm for us adults, but kids will probably have a much better time with an array of different colored writing utensils like colored pencils and markers. They can even draw pictures to match the content of the text.
Reward your child’s efforts
This will help them feel proud of their accomplishments and encourage them to keep writing. Even just a reassuring word can help build their confidence.
Most importantly: Have fun!
Letter writing should be a fun and enjoyable experience for both you and your child. Leave equal space for play and productivity – it takes a long time to learn to write well, so encouraging the effort itself is the most productive thing you can do.
With these simple tips, your preschooler will be a certified pen pal in no time. Who knows, you might just open your mailbox one day to see they’ve written you a letter too!
